Aviation Goals

At this point, there are three aviation goals I’m working towards: 1.) Earn additional ratings and certificates: Instrument (accomplished June 13, 2020), Commercial (accomplished April 14th, 2021), and Certified Flight Instructor 2.) Land at every public airport on the Los Angeles Sectional chart 3.) Share aviation with as many people as I can.

Below is a map that shows my progress on meeting my goal to land at every public airport on the Los Angeles Sectional chart.

Red: Airports I plan to land at.
Green: Airports I have landed at.
Red Diamond: Unable to Land  Due to Conditions Per Rental Agreement

I hope this doesn’t sound a bit too crazy but I’m a recent Aviation Science (A.S.) grad from Mt. SAC and you’re idea of landing at every public airport in California is fantastic!! If you ever need flight planning done for you so as to aleviate certain pressures associated with your goal I’d be willing to help.

    • Phil Anady says:

Congragulations on your recent graduation. My flight planning at this stage of the game is relatively simple but thanks for the offer. Best of luck to your career in aviation.

  2. Tim Madrid says:

Impressive goal, Phil. Good luck with the endeavor and thanks for sharing the pictures & updates!

  3. Jason says:

    Nice, Phil!!!

  4. JONI ZEREBNY says:

EXCELLENT PHIL……I’M READY TO GO UP AGIAN ANYTIME 🙂 JONI

  5. Greg B says:

I love your pictures and wish you the best. I was fortunate enough to get a fair amount of flying time in California (Monterey area) and in Washington State while I was in the military, mostly in the Army and Navy Aero Clubs, and enjoyed every minute of it. Like you, I fly for the scenery and will never be a professional pilot. I now live on the East Coast and can say that there is no scenery that compares with the West Coast. Nevertheless, flying is still fun, and I now rent a C-162 which I very much enjoy. Great little airplane and tremendous visibility, but maybe a tad sensitive in the landing flair…most of my landings with it tend to be in the “uh oh, plop” category than smooth. A C-162 here outside of Washington D.C. rents for about $110 per hour. What’s the cost out there?

    • Phil Anady says:

The Cessna 162 cost $125 per hour wet out here. Which is a really good price compared to the other nearby schools.

The Skycatcher is definitely light on the controls. It took me some time to really feel comfortable landing this aircraft as most of my time has been in a C-172. It really does want to stay in the air and is a fun aircraft to fly.

      Thanks for the post.

  6. Casey says:

Hi Phil, Great ambitions! Let me know when you schedule KIYK. Lunch is on me. My suggestion is 2O7, O26, and KIYK, in that order, in one day.

    Casey Wilson

    • Phil Anady says:

Thanks for the offer and suggestion. Im not sure when ill make it up that way but ill let you know. I think I might land at 2O7 and O26 the next time I’m up at Bishop and rent a 172 from up there and fly down the valley.

      Thanks

      • afreelancewriter says:

My offer for lunch at KIYK still stands, but I’ll be out of the country until the end of June.

  7. Dale (Cap'n Pinetree) says:

when you fly into L52 Oceano aerodrome look for the large hanger “Pirate’s Lair” and I’ll have a soda for you. L52 is on your quest so I’ll be looking for you. Cap’n Pinetree.

  8. Joyce says:

Good for you! I am doing the same sort of thing from the other end of California. It is a fantastic learning experience. The most I have done on one flight is seven airports, that was a huge challenge, but it taught me a lot about planning and preparing for the next landing. I know you are learning lots. Have a great time. There are some 250 California airports to fly to, so lots to do for a long time.

    • Phil Anady says:

7 airports in one flight is impressive. I think the most I have landed in one flight was three or maybe four. The farther I move out the more airports I will need to land in one outing. Best of luck in accomplishing your goal!

  9. Jack Collins says:

Phil I am a seventeen year old from washington I have been flying since I was eleven. I soloed at sixteen and am now on the way to earning my private pilot certificate. I would like to say I love your goal and will follow you for the rest of your mission. If your ever in washington make sure to swing by s43 harvey field its a great little airport..

  10. Editor says:

Don’t miss the airport in Trinity Center, California. It is a beautiful lakeside airport. Fly in barbecue on Aug. 31st. Airport has a couple of bikes so you can get around town, down to marina, restaurant, store, lodging, etc. There are residences partly within fenced airstrip and I think at least one of them does VRBO, awesome to stay on airstrp because you can tie down behind home and views of lake, Alps & aircraft are awesome. Great airport pics on this website, just scroll through gallery, http://www.291lakeviewdrive.com. Have fun lucky one!

  11. Hey Phil…found your site this evening while Googling Young Eagles. We’ve a YE event here in Porterville this Saturday (18 October 2014). Porterville is your post 80 on your fly to CA airports. Haven’t been pilot in command since the year before my oldest was born…perhaps I’ll be able to do it again: http://web.archive.org/web/20091026202058/http://www.geocities.com/famreynoldspv/aviation.html

    • Phil Anady says:

The Young Eagles event is a great program. It provides a great opportunity to introduce kids to aviation and all the possibilities it holds. Hope you make it back into the air soon!

  12. Brian says:

Hi Phil, very nice site, I use your pictures from time to time when I go to an unknown airport! 🙂

Out of curiosity, you wrote “Red Diamond: Unable to Land Due to Conditions Per Rental Agreement” is that the rental agreement with the FBO or the insurance?

    • Phil Anady says:

Thanks Brian, it is great to here that the site is of use. The insurance for the flight school makes it a requirement for all renters to keep the premium down.

      • Brian says:

Hmm ok… interesting. I would think they would restrict you out of Catalina (KAVX) before an airport like Santa Paula (KIZA) or L52…. Most places require a separate checkout for Catalina as far as I remember.

      • Phil Anady says:

At the previous two flight schools I have rented from they require a Catalina checkout. It was during that time that I made the flight out there. I’m not sure about the current flight school.

  13. Vanya Derkach says:

You should do a review of every airport you land at! Mention how the runway is, the approach, the site seeing and also how the airport is itself. Busy? Looks like was built with a lot of money in the budget. Those types of stuff. Anyway you should visit here KSMO! It may close over the next few years and I hope it doesn’t because I plan to get my training there. Cheers!

  14. Carl Watson says:

I’m impressed, too bad you are not able to add Meadowlark,Huntington Beach or the Temecula Airport they are both gone. My wife and I just bought a house under the downwind side of Hemet Airport. Love the sound of a plane overhead. Enjoy

  15. Hi, I’ve been considering a similar mission. Perhaps you could provide more information on some highlights of certain airports such as what were the most enjoyable or most difficult. Great post!
